Wero Thrift Club in Berlin: This is what the future of digital payments looks like

No cash, no cards, just Wero.

On Saturday, the first “Wero Thrift Club” took place in Berlin – Europe’s influencer-led, completely cashless flea market, organized by Wero, the European payment solution developed by the European Payment Initiative (EPI).

DEPT® took charge of the development and curated twelve of Germany’s hottest fashion influencers alongside creators from France and Belgium to sell pre-loved pieces exclusively through Wero, demonstrating the payment app’s seamless peer-to-peer functionality in a culturally relevant, real-world setting.

Cashless Meets Culture in Berlin

The event concept was born from a strategic insight: to move beyond digital campaigns and prove Wero’s value as the essential connection bringing people together. DEPT® identified Berlin’s thriving flea market culture and vintage fashion community as the perfect backdrop to showcase Wero as the indispensable hero of modern, cashless transactions.

It also tapped into powerful consumer trends: Europe’s push for payment sovereignty independent from the US, the explosive growth of the second-hand economy among sustainability-conscious consumers, and the accelerating shift toward cashless payments among digital-native audiences.

From strategy to street-level buzz

DEPT® led the full strategic vision and execution – from initial concept development to influencer selection. The agency curated twelve German fashion influencers to sell their wardrobes, while also bringing in creators from France and Belgium to generate content as visitors and buyers. Special guest Luis Freitag from the “Elevator Boys” brought additional star power with his millions of TikTok and Instagram followers, as did Leni Marie, the younger sister of Dagi Bee.

To drive attendance beyond influencer followings, DEPT® developed and executed a hyperlocal paid media campaign targeting Berlin and surrounding areas within 40 kilometers.

Today, brands need more than great campaigns – they need real moments in the places where people actually are: on the street, in conversation, in everyday life. The Wero Thrift Club was exactly that – a moment where brand, culture, and people truly came together.

DEPT® helped us show that Wero is more than a payment app – it’s a way to connect people in the moment. This event brought our brand to life, turning everyday transactions into effortless experiences and making European payments feel fast, seamless, and culturally relevant.

Michele Hermann, Head of Marketing B2C at Wero

“The Wero Thrift Club” demonstrated what seamless payments look like: a completely cashless flea market where all peer-to-peer transactions were handled exclusively through a single payment solution. DEPT® and Wero have been working together since February 2025. The event brought together DEPT®’s Strategy and Influencer Marketing specialists, with event production handled by Das Kartell.
