Mammut
Giving mountainwear the life it deserves

- Brand & Media
Mammut is an outdoor brand that makes products for life above the tree line, staying true to its promise for more than 160 years.
In the mountainwear category today, this dedication is in short supply. Outdoor brands are increasingly likely to be seen on the street than on the summit, deviating from their core values in search of profit.
To reinforce its status as a true mountain icon, Mammut launched Not A Streetwear Brand in October 2024. The campaign fights against the brand’s ‘streetwear’ counterparts and establishes Mammut as the mountainwear expert. This bolstered fame and meaning for Mammut, but as gorpcore continued growing in popularity, more work still needed to be done.
To build on the momentum, Mammut needed to create its ‘second album’ and get its products and people back on the mountain. To do so, Mammut sought a bold and culturally resonant brand moment in Q3/4 2025 to drive fame and talkability.
The goal was to position Mammut as authentic, confident, and firmly rooted in the mountains. We leveraged humor, shareability, and a social-first approach to push away from streetwear competition and reach beyond the core outdoor audience.
The work needed to feel current without losing sight of what makes Mammut a true mountain brand.
Getting people out of the city
Whilst gorpcore continued to grow in popularity, so did the backlash. Influencers, opinion leaders, and Reddit forums were alive with anti-gorpcore and streetwear sentiment. The movement was growing, adding fuel to Mammut’s fire. It was time to drive it forward and get people out of the city and onto the mountain like a true mountainwear brand should.
Mammut faced the challenge of connecting with its core outdoor audience while still appealing to a broader, culturally engaged social audience, establishing itself as the true mountainwear brand.
The task? Reinforce Mammut’s mountain expertise, champion the product in its natural environment, and cut through a crowded social landscape with limited media spend – all while creating work that felt native to social, not overly polished or brand heavy.
Introducing the Mammut Mountainwear Rescue Team
To build on anti-gorpcore sentiment and tackle the larger streetwear trends, Mammut launched Mammut Mountainwear Rescue Team, a fictional unit on a mission to reclaim mountain gear from urban misuse and return it to where it belongs. The idea playfully acknowledges the cultural reality of outdoor gear as streetwear, while confidently reclaiming Mammut’s place in the mountains.
Blending CCTV-style storytelling with a tongue-in-cheek twist, the campaign balanced humor and authority, keeping Mammut’s premium mountaineering heritage at the forefront.
Built on self-awareness and a recognizable cultural truth, the work reframed authenticity as something confident, modern, and highly shareable.
The campaign was delivered as a global, social-first brand activation, balancing high-impact creative with a flexible, media-efficient setup:
- One master edit
- Three bespoke cutdowns
- A full-day shoot in London
- Two half-day shoots in Austria to capture the end-credit mountain reveal
This approach allowed the work to unfold across formats and markets, maximizing reach and engagement while keeping production lean and focused. The result was a consistent creative idea that could travel globally without losing impact.
What it delivered
Cultural cut-through: Mountainwear Rescue became the campaign’s most recognizable and shareable idea, tapping directly into anti-gorpcore sentiment and reframing Mammut as confidently “of the mountain, not the street.”
Earned amplification: The concept’s clarity and humor helped generate PR coverage and organic sharing, extending its reach beyond paid media.
Broader relevance without dilution: The work resonated with culturally engaged social audiences while reinforcing credibility with Mammut’s core outdoor community.
Key learning: High-risk, culturally opinionated ideas, when grounded in authentic brand truth, deliver disproportionate attention, engagement, and earned reach in crowded social environments.
