HSBC UK

Building an accessibility hub for a global bank

HSBC UK bank serves personal and business customers in the UK and has an extensive branch network.

Recognising the importance of accessibility, they reached out to DEPT® to create an “accessibility hub” to train its stakeholders and employees.

Accessibility learning platform

Working closely with HSBC, we built an accessibility portal.

This portal is a comprehensive learning platform that educates internal stakeholders and employees about accessibility principles and best practices. It outlines the significance of accessibility, individuals who may require accessibility support, and strategies for creating accessible systems. It is used by employees around the world so they can better serve digital users with disabilities.

To build it, we integrated React and Adobe Experience Manager (AEM). And to ensure seamless compatibility between the two systems, we used headless architecture and server-side rendering.

Customisable settings

To tailor the user experience to the unique needs of each platform visitor, we added customisable accessibility settings so employees can better understand design considerations. These settings included adjustable font size, contrast levels, and screen reader compatibility.

Through this, we ensured optimal platform accessibility for individuals with visual impairments, including dyslexia, blind, and deaf-blind users.

The portal underwent accessibility auditing by an independent 3rd party, and it met the W3C’s (World Wide Web Consortium’s) Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Version 2.1

Intuitive interface

To enhance functionality and usability, we integrated the platform with Brightcove, a platform for hosting and streaming videos. Each chapter contains one video so users can quickly navigate within their current video and find the next in the series. HSBC’s internal Single Sign-On (SSO) system was also integrated with Adobe for streamlined authentication and access management for users.

These essential integrations complemented the learning experience, providing users with a cohesive and easy-to-use interface.

Outcomes

Following the successful implementation and positive stakeholder reception, HSBC expanded the accessibility portal globally. The global rollout extended the platform’s benefits to a diverse audience, promoting awareness and understanding of accessibility principles on a global scale.
