Are you currently at university or a coding bootcamp but confused about what to expect from the working world? Have you struggled to meet like minded people now that courses are delivered remotely? 

It’s tough, we know. That’s exactly why we’re hosting this DEPT® Tech Meetup, to help you kickstart a career in digital!

Our experts will be available to advise you on what to expect from a career in tech, as well as some practical skills to help you land your dream job. 

The DEPT® development team will share their own personal experiences, detail the career opportunities you may not have already considered, and answer any burning questions you may have. 

But it’s not all talk! You’ll also have the chance to gain hands-on experience (and feedback) through a series of dedicated breakout sessions.

TALK / From cabin crew to code champion

Mand knows first hand what it takes to carve out a career in code. After working as a cabin crew member for some time, she pursued a new career direction and is now a proud Frontend Developer at DEPT®. In this talk she’ll share her story, the resources that assisted her in getting started and what you can expect from the working world. 

TALK / Entering the exclusive world of backend development

After completing Northcoders’ bootcamp, James made a swift and successful transition into the world of backend development, and never looked back! In this talk he’ll share what piqued his interest, how he learned C#/.Net after only knowing JS and the many different paths available to junior developers.

We’ll also provide you with the opportunity to participate in your choice of breakout session during the evening. Whether you want to develop your frontend skills or delve into the world of backend development, we’ve got you covered. Alternatively, you may want to fire across any questions or learn how to impress hiring managers and land your dream digital job. 

BREAKOUT SESSION / Frontend 

As we all know, team work makes the dream work. So in this session you’ll be assigned a brief to work on in a group using Codepen. You’ll have the chance to develop a solution, improve your CSS skills and get feedback on your work. 

It’s the perfect opportunity to learn from peers and mentors by sharing experiences and expertise, and a great practice run for completing a tech test that companies often ask candidates to complete during the interview process.

BREAKOUT SESSION / Backend

The goal of this session is to improve your development skills by completing a coding challenge with your peers. We’ll run through an intro to TDD (test driven development) and then you’ll have the chance to write some tests and code your solution to a set task.

Whether you want to know about the skills required to work with particular software or get an insight into the recruitment process, we’re willing to answer everything!
