Head of Engineering (Internal Business Systems)

JOB PURPOSE

The Head of Engineering at DEPT® is a key leadership role responsible for the delivery of technology solutions that underpin our internal business operations. This individual will work closely with the Head of Internal Systems and cross-functional teams to drive our best-of-breed SaaS strategy that supports the work of Depsters. This position requires a combination of technical expertise, team management, and strategic thinking to ensure our technology meets and exceeds stakeholder’s expectations while staying within budget.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Technology Delivery: Collaboration with the Head of Internal Systems and other stakeholders to deliver on the chosen technology strategy for internal systems. Ensuring that technology supports the company’s vision and growth plans.
  • Team Management: Managing a team of engineers, providing leadership, mentorship, and guidance to ensure they excel in their roles and contribute to the company’s success. Defining and supporting clear career development paths for engineering team members, promoting growth and professional development within the organisation.
    Standardisation: Establishing and enforcing engineering best practices, standards, and processes to drive consistency, scalability, and maintainability across the technology stack.
  • Consistency in delivery: Ensuring consistent and timely delivery of projects (and by exception product releases) by setting clear expectations, managing priorities and optimising resource allocation.
  • Quality Assurance: Overseeing the implementation of robust quality assurance practices, including reviews, testing, and continuous integration, to maintain high-quality software implementation.
  • Security: Leading efforts to ensure the security of systems and privacy of data, implementing security best practices, and ensuring that monitoring is implemented in ways that help the security team to respond to potential threats or vulnerabilities. This requires close collaboration with DEPT®’s Global Information Security Officer and alignment with policies as described in our ISO27001:2022 based Information Security Management System.
  • Visibility in Performance: Establishing key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics for the engineering team’s performance and track progress towards goals. Provide regular reports to the leadership team.
  • Vendor Management: Maintaining technology-focused relationships with third-party vendors and technology partners, ensuring they align with our technology standards and contribute to the company’s success.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

  • Proven experience in a leadership role (2 – 5 years) within a technology-focused company (preferably a digital agency).
  • Experience in translating business requirements and architectural designs into practical, understandable implementation processes.
  • Experience in managing and developing high-performing engineering teams.
  • Experience with remote teams in offshore / nearshore locations.
  • Strong technical background and experience with modern software development technologies and practices: software development methodologies, agile practices, and DevOps.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and the ability to present strategic options.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and other technology-focused leadership roles (Head of Systems and IT, Head of Internal Systems, Information Security Officer, Head of IT Support, etc).
  • Strong (project) management skills and the ability to drive projects to completion within scope, schedule, and budget.
