Sesame Street

Augmented reality transports kids into Sesame Street

Sesame Street’s 50th anniversary called for a special celebration. As the iconic children’s program approached the big 5-0, the folks at Sesame Street started thinking big. They didn’t want to simply invite their audience to watch anniversary festivities. They wanted to transport people into a celebration alongside all their favorite characters. Augmented Reality offered a compelling solution.

With AR, kids can become their favorite characters

DEPT® worked with Weyo to get the job done. Together we designed Sesame Street Yourself, an app that uses AR to transform people’s faces and facial movements into animated versions of Sesame Street characters.

Kids can interact and play with Bert, Ernie, Elmo, and Cookie Monster. DEPT® built the engine for these AR masks, along with a fully customized content management system that allows Weyo to manage all aspects of the app, including masks, costumes, songs, and games.

An award-winning app with global recognition.

Sesame Street first came on to the scene in the US over 50 years ago, and has since become an international staple of children’s education. Now, Sesame Street Yourself lets kids everywhere (including the kid in all of us), become a part of that world.

The app was the People’s Choice and Gold Telly winner in 2020, Forbes’ best AR app for children in 2019, and featured as part of Apple’s showcase event, WWDC, that year. Since launch, it’s been Apple’s “App of the Day” multiple times around the world, including the USA, UK, and Australia.
