Ten Crazy Questions: Marjan Straathof

Header Marjan Straathof

Curious about the people who work at Dept and make all the amazing work you see of us? We thought so. In this new blog format we’re introducing our employees one by one by not asking the regular questions, but different ones. Want to know who once put 250 of our business contacts in cc instead of bcc in an email, who desperately wants to see the Clueless trend make a comeback in fashion and who really feels a bond with peanut butter? You’re about to find out.

Hi Marjan! How did you end up at Dept and what do you do here all day?

Officially, I joined Dept about 2.5 years ago when the whole buy & build journey started. Unofficially, I party-crashed all of TamTam’s events over the last 7 years (with SXSW being one of my best memories). Basically, I loved the culture and after being a happy freelancer for five years, I decided it was time to go for a ‘real’ job and I joined Dept.

I joined Dept as the Head of the Marketing team and love to brainwash clients, talents and Depsters. Moreover, I love building the brand, making us proud, organising the up and coming awesome festival & weekender and seeing Depsters smile. All with the ultimate goal that when people look back, they realize that working with/at Dept was the best thing that ever happened to them.

If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?

A tiger. Because they look awesome. They are unique; no two tigers have the same pattern. They are both strong and brave, and carnivores with manners.

If Jon Snow walked through that door right now wearing a sombrero, what would he say and why would he be here?

Yep, as a Depster you should be fan of Game of Thrones, but I’m not. So boring answer – I don’t have a clue.

What are some small things that make your day better?

Listening to my Soundcloud, or to a brilliant ‘How I Built This’ podcast. When random people share our social posts, flip-flops, teamwork, a nice cold wheat beer, Liz my Ragdoll, dancing at a good party, talented peeps around me, summer dresses and philosophising about life.

If you had to start a completely different job tomorrow, what would it be?

The first thing that comes to mind was being in the army, because I like being outside, hard work, tough conditions; but I hate war. So I think it would be organising Tomorrowland. Big, bigger, biggest, fun, magic, friends and good times.

Which word do you always miss-spell?

Collegue? Colleague?

What was your biggest fashion mistake?

Flared jeans with platform shoes. Yes, I used to walk around like a spice girl. Including the hair.

Would you rather choose a relaxing vacation or an active vacation?

Active, for sure. Simply an unplanned yet active vacation. Unexpected adventures are the best. One of my favourite trips has been to the holy Mount Kailash in Tibet. Probably one of the few places left on earth without a telephone connection.

What are your last 5 searches on Google (don’t cheat)?

Commerce Podcast (because we need to do more with podcasts)
Hoodie Fashion 2018 (you can’t imagine how many discussions we had in order to create this years Dept sweater)
Berghem Karten (because I need to qualify for the KartCup 2018)
Bizzey (ok, guilty pleasure)
Sushi Mijdrecht (I simply hate cooking, and we don’t have sushi in De Kwakel)

How prepared are you for a zombie apocalypse?

I probably live with one of the best handymen in the Netherlands. Besides, he loves animals (and especially koi fish) so we would probably deal pretty well with zombies. And if not, we have a problem. At work, I pretend to be organised, but at home, I’m not that kind of person. I never have a shopping list and my freezer is empty. Although, I was a girl scout so should be pretty good at making a clove hitch and a fire. Not sure if that makes you prepared.
