How AEM Meets Midsized Companies CMS Requirements
Adobe recently launched a campaign to make Adobe Experience Manager affordable for midsized companies with their cloud solution. But does it meet the requirements of midsized companies described in my previous blog? Let’s get the requirements together and have a look.
The key to success in the digital world is experience management. Whether you are a traditional, big company or a start-up, consumers demand great digital experience. They expect up-to-date information, stunning content, an excellent mobile experience and more and more they expect tailored, personalized content and offers.
Giving your customers personalized experiences is only possible if you use the right technology based tools in terms of web content management, digital asset management and mobile apps. There are a lot of CMS’s available. One of the most used enterprise CMS’s is Adobe Experience Manager.

AEM provides an excellent authoring experience through its in-context content editor. This editor goes beyond the standard WYSIWYG editor most CMS’s use. What you see is 100% what you get and the context is also visible while editing.
For managing and editing imagery AEM offers the DAM (Digital Assets Manager), in which images may be resized, cropped and it’s different renditions can be managed. If you place an asset in a certain component on your website, the component makes sure the asset does not ruin your layout.
Document files like PDF and DOCX are also managed though the DAM. Unlike most CMS’s these document become fully indexed once uploaded. This means the documents will be found by google and your SEO will improve.
I’ve never seen a search functionality as rich as the search functionality Adobe provides within AEM. Let’s see what their solutions are in the different fields of search support:
Refreshment: The search engine’s indexes are updated real-time. New pages and documents should show up in the search results immediately after they’ve been published.
Thoroughness: All pages, files and assets in AEM are indexed. Document files are indexed in such a way that they show up in a search if they contain matching text.
Speed: Search results come up within milliseconds; this enables showing search results while typing. It also has an auto-complete function.
Scope: The Search API that AEM offers allows defining a section of the website for which search results should be returned. In this manner a search on the consumer part of the website would yield different results than a search on the business part of the website.
Ranking: The Lucene/Solr technology that powers the search index allows defining terms that should be boosted. If many of your customers would search for a certain product but it’s page turns up to far down in the results, the product’s name should be boosted in the search index, causing it’s search result to move up.
Customization: The open-source API’s within AEM allow for full customization to adapt its search functionality as needed.
Creating user interaction on a website using AEM is easy. Serveral out-of-the-box components such as forms, forums and blogs with comment sections are available. These components can be deployed on any page. The form functionality allows for triggering of workflows and sending of E-mail.
Newsletters can be sent through integration with Adobe Campaign to specific groups of users. The important data about bounces and successful delivery is available through Adobe Campaign as well.
Versioning within AEM is quite advanced. It offers versioning on page level, but is also able to restore entire sections of a website to a former state. Versions are created automatically when content is published. While working on content, authors also have the possibility to manually create new versions. Using the Time Machine authors can glance back in time to see what the website looked like at a certain point in time and compare the changes with the current state.
‘Launches’ makes it is possible to prepare a campaign while still keeping the ability to adjust content on the live website. This way marketeers can work on their campaigns and the web teams may continue editing and publishing content on those some pages. Once a campaign is launched all changes are merged and published, bringing together weeks of work from marketeers and web teams.
Roles and permissions
Roles and permissions are fully supported within AEM. If needed AEM can be integrated with an LDAP system, so administrators won’t have to set up new accounts and groups for users. With the User Manager an administrator can define who has access to which websites and tools within AEM.
Users can be assigned to groups, which is convenient advantage of the workflow module. The workflow module allows administrators and authors to perform tasks such as approving comments and posts and forwarding pages to other users or groups of users for review and approval.
Multiple website support
AEM provides great support for managing multiple websites. There is no limit to how many websites can be launched on a single AEM set-up. Through the MSM (Multi Site Manager) it is possible to automate many tasks like creating new websites or rolling out a set of changes across a large number of brand websites.
AEM has support for multiple languages. It offers a translation manager that can be used to provide translations for both websites as well as the authoring interface. Content for multiple languages may be managed though the MSM module. The MSM helps to keep the content and structure for websites in different languages in sync.
