A list of data and some words. Some briefs start with a baked-in solution. Others are technically correct but ignore real factors that make the point moot. They don\u2019t create energy. They don\u2019t create clarity.<\/p>\n<h3\tclass=\"text text-sans-32 block-text__text\"\n\t>How to spot a real brief<\/h3>\n\n<p\tclass=\"text text-sans-24 block-text__text\"\n\t>Here\u2019s a litmus test. If your brief doesn\u2019t meet these criteria, it\u2019s not ready:<\/p>\n\n<ul\n\tclass=\"list text-sans-24 block-list__list\"\n\t>\n\t<li><strong>Legible to anyone<\/strong> \u2013 If a new hire (or your neighbour) can\u2019t read the first 10% and say, \u201cI get it,\u201d it\u2019s not ready.<\/li><li><strong>Synthesises, then hypothesises<\/strong> \u2013 Data is input, insight is output, and strategy is the bet.<\/li><li><strong>Takes a risk<\/strong> \u2013 It must be able to be completely wrong or completely right. A great brief says, \u201cIf we do this, we\u2019ll outperform any other approach.\u201d It\u2019s not a hedge.<\/li><li><strong>Defines winning<\/strong> \u2013 If there\u2019s no shared definition of \u201cwinning,\u201d you&#8217;re not briefing, you\u2019re documenting.<\/li><li><strong>It&#8217;s a Word doc<\/strong> \u2013 Not a deck or a spreadsheet. If it&#8217;s more than three pages, ask which words deserve to be there.<\/li><li><strong>Creates empathy across disciplines<\/strong> \u2013 Everyone from product to UX to marketing should see themselves in it.<\/li><li><strong>Tells a story using \u201cbut\/therefore\u201d<\/strong> \u2013 \u201cWe\u2019re seeing X, <em>but<\/em> Y is breaking. <em>Therefore<\/em>, we\u2019ll solve it Z way.\u201d If it\u2019s all &#8220;and, and, and,\u201d you\u2019re stacking symptoms, not diagnosing anything.<\/li><\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\t\n\t<\/div>\n\n<div\n\tclass=\"block-assets-and-copy js-block-assets-and-copy\"\n\tdata-variant=\"copy-only\"\n\tdata-content-align=\"start\"\n>\n\t<h2\tclass=\"text text-sans-48 block-assets-and-copy__title\"\n\tdata-animation=\"slide\" data-animation-target=\"words\" >The problem of scale<\/h2><div\tdata-animation=\"slide-fade\" data-animation-target=\"inner-items-separate\" data-animation-delay=\"0.15\" data-animation-stagger=\"0.2\" class=\"block-assets-and-copy__content\" >\n\t<p\tclass=\"text text-sans-24 block-assets-and-copy__text\"\n\t>Briefing gets exponentially harder at scale.<br><br>You\u2019re not briefing one designer. You\u2019re briefing 14 teams across six time zones, with engineering, legal, media, and localisation dependencies. You\u2019re not briefing a feature. You\u2019re briefing a system.<br><br>This is where most organisations quietly give up. They replace purpose with process. They stop defining strategy and start scrambling to create consensus.<br><br>But that\u2019s when the brief matters most.<br><br>At scale, a real brief isn\u2019t a document. It\u2019s an operating system. It governs how people think. It unites functions. It limits drift. It creates clarity without a single meeting.
