\n\t\t\t\t\n\n\t\tThis week, a small shock wave is going through e-commerce land. Has google really announced to make google shopping free? While this is welcome news for those not already advertising their products via google\u2019s paid shopping listings, there are many retailers who will be reeling at the new competition this move will create.\t<\/h2>\n\n\n\t\tGoogle has been working on this for a while, and the COVID-19 crisis posed the perfect opportunity to fast track the plans. As Bill Ready, Google President of Commerce, stated: \u201c The retail sector has faced many threats over the years, which have only intensified during the coronavirus pandemic. With physical stores shuttered, digital commerce has become a lifeline for retailers. And as consumers increasingly shop online, they\u2019re searching not just for essentials but also things like toys, apparel, and home goods. While this presents an opportunity for struggling businesses to reconnect with consumers, many cannot afford to do so at scale.\u201d So, it\u2019s an altruistic move by Google? Well, not quite.\t<\/p>\n\n\n\t\tFirstly, to clarify, Google Shopping is not going to be free, but product listings are being added that don\u2019t require payment. This only concerns the Google Shopping tab and not the shopping results on the \u2018normal\u2019 search page, which will remain paid. The update is currently being rolled out in the United States with a select group of customers, with plans to roll-out worldwide later this year.
\t<\/p>\n\n\n\t\tThe free listings will be displayed much like the organic search results that we are so used to. Paid shopping ads will be listed in the uppermost positions and above the free natural shopping listings below. These will show within the Shopping tab on Google. Existing paid ads will be augmented automatically, enabling them to benefit from the new free listings in addition to these paid ads already running.
