We placed a team of digital experts, designers and developers into their organisation to support and up-skill their internal teams.

Skills and scale combined

Cartrawler is a global online car rental company working with over 2,000 travel retailers and 100 international airlines. In 2018, they were seeking a digital partner to integrate seamlessly with their in-house design and development teams.

This is where Dept stepped in. The scale, quality, and resources we could offer Cartrawler drew them to us. Especially when combined with our ability to work onsite alongside their teams and raise their development capacity.

But it was the immediate skills synergy between the Cartrawler and Dept teams which ultimately drove the decision to choose us as their onsite engagement provider.

Immediate added value

Our onsite solution allowed us to hit the ground running in Cartrawler. A shared understanding of approach made it easy to seamlessly integrate our onsite team into Cartrawler’s working processes. In order to support Cartrawler’s vision of their product roadmap, we immediately began to guide the design and development of their product set. Our experienced UI and UX designers also worked to refine the internal design process.

  • It was particularly important to solve challenges around user experience and user interface design. We delivered a fresh look and feel, an improved user experience, and a truly responsive website.
  • Increased scalability now allows higher session volumes, while providing faster page load times.
  • New products were also delivered across all work streams due to the uplift in development capacity.

Moving to new technologies

Cartrawler wanted to move from older development frameworks, which are difficult to use and expensive to maintain. Introducing new technologies and development methodologies requires an experienced team. They also needed our knowledge of how to manage a migration from these frameworks.

Improved time to market for new product features and the ability to scale has contributed to better experiences for Cartrawler B2B customers. This is especially true on mobile.

Upskilling in DevOps

Improved DevOps was also integral to the initial project and future working processes. Our development teams are known to be master builders. We apply a “better, faster” approach to DevOps, and impart this knowledge to our clients.

We held training sessions in our methods to improve Cartrawler’s approaches long term. Upskilling their staff in automation, testing, and new development tools. The end result is that their DevOps team now supports a better and faster delivery cycle.

Long term support

At Dept, we build lasting relationships with our clients. Cartrawler now receives continued support from the Dept team. We aim for flexibility, offering resources directly in response to client resourcing and skills requirements.

Going forward, Cartrawler can quickly engage our onsite presence as needed and reduce requirements when it’s not. As our clients continue to grow, we will grow with them, always adding value to their digital strategies.
