Ten Crazy Questions: Dimi Albers
Curious about the people who work at Dept and make all the amazing work you see of us? We thought so. In this new blog format we’re introducing our employees one by one by not asking the regular questions, but different ones. Want to know who once put 250 of our business contacts in cc instead of bcc in an email, who desperately wants to see the Clueless trend make a comeback in fashion and who really feels a bond with peanut butter? You’re about to find out.
Hi Dimi! How did you end up at Dept and what do you do here all day?
My previous job was as a rookie university drop-out at a voice over IP start-up in Rotterdam. While I worked there from 2000-2006, I came across TamTam twice as the founder of that company, and Bart (Manuel) and I knew each other from the Tech University in Delft. First was when TamTam created our website, and the second time was when we sold a VoIP ISDN30 connection to TamTam. I was tasked with project managing the installation of the thing, which at the time was the equivalent of creating advanced AR apps that are actually effective today: we knew it could technically work, but we never really did it, we convinced the client to hire us and we were gonna will our way into making it work. When the team and I pulled it off after a bunch of late night calls and sessions, Bart told my then-boss: “hey, whenever Dimi is looking for a job, I’ll have one for him here”. About a year later I quit my job, took a six month sabbatical and then called Bart. The rest is history.
As Managing Director of Dept, it is my goal to make Dept the best agency in the world. In practice this means I spend most of my days talking to clients and Depsters. I need to understand what clients want and what Depsters need and use these insights to help us all will our way into being the best we can be as an agency. Oh, and I tend to laugh hard and make quite some noise in the process.
Your favourite tv-show? And why?
The Sopranos is my favourite – and by the way, the best – TV-show of all time with The Wire coming in as a close second. The Sopranos is basically the grand-daddy of our series culture today as it was the first series to surpass feature films in terms of writing, directing, dialogue, psychology and of course pure acting performances. Yes, there have been other amazing series since then, but in some shape or form, they all took a page out of the Sopranos’ book. If you are going to watch one TV-series this year, make sure it is The Sopranos.
If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?
Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up. It knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve to death. It doesn’t matter whether you are a lion or a gazelle. When the sun comes up, you better be running.
What’s your favourite ’90s jam?
Darn, that’s a tough one… Can I name an Album? Then Only Built 4 Cuban Linx by Chef Raekwon (of Wu Tang Clan). And Reasonable Doubt by Jay-Z. And Ready to Die by Notorious B.I.G. And… Ok, I’ll stop. I think you catch my drift here. 🙂
Who would win a fight between Spiderman and Batman? (Describe the fight if possible.)
Are you kidding me?! Batman just beat the brakes off Superman in Dawn of Justice… How can he ever lose to a teenager in spider-spandex with permanent girlfriend issues?
What’s the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to you? No holding back.
In the third week at my first real job (VoIP start-up, see above), I was asked to send out a newsletter to all our (B2B) clients and press contacts. It was 2000 so we did it the old fashioned way: through Microsoft Outlook ‘2000’. Guess who put the complete mailing list of about 250 people in the CC instead of BCC list… .
Forever without a phone or forever without a laptop?
Screw the laptop. I am – as everyone around me will attest to – completely attached to my iPhone. Not even Batman can wrestle that thing out of my hands.
Would you rather choose a relax vacation or an active vacation?
Me and my wife, Nina, have two sons. Fedor is six years old and Lev is three years old. And they both have inherited my level of energy. So we basically have no idea what a relax vacation is.
What are your last 5 searches on Google? (don’t cheat)
- Britax Römer (potential client)
- Bluetooth Headphones for kids (vacation is coming)
- Geraint Thomas Timetrialing (see if Dumoulin can catch him to win the Tour de France)
- Mo Money Mo Problems GIF (to celebrate some nice pitch wins in our global sales whats app group)
- Brooklyn’s Finest lyrics (classic Jay-Z & Biggie song on Reasonable Doubt, see question 4)
What is the best dessert and why?
Dame Blanche. It has ice cream -> WIN. It has chocolate -> WIN. It has whipped cream -> WIN. And they serve it (or it’s local namesake) at about 95% of all restaurants worldwide -> WIN.
