Ten Crazy Questions: Frank Schmid
Curious about the people who work at Dept and make all the amazing work you see of us? We thought so. In this new blog format we’re introducing our employees one by one by not asking the regular questions, but different ones. Want to know who once put 250 of our business contacts in cc instead of bcc in an email, who desperately wants to see the Clueless trend make a comeback in fashion and who really feels a bond with peanut butter? You’re about to find out.
Hi Frank! How did you end up at Dept and what do you do here all day?
Dept and I go way back. All the way to 2005. Back in the day, I was working at Oxxio (still a big client of Dept). Paul, Bart and I worked on the first website for Oxxio, which was nothing more than a few HTML pages with a flash banner here and there. We’ve always kept in touch since. Then, when Dimi, Paul and Bart were designing the master plan to start Dept, they asked me to get on board. Needless to say, that it was the best decision of my life. I am a generalist by nature, with an eclectic taste in food, music and people. That’s reflected in my work as well. Therefore, I get involved with a huge variety of things. Building the stage for our super talented Depsters to perform on is what I consider my task. Making 1000 Depsters feel like one family and able to excel at what they love doing; that’s what truly drives me as a professional.
If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?
A penguin. I admire them for their endurance, loyalty, teamwork and of course their immaculate style. And I like snow.
What are some small things that make your day better?
When a very diverse bunch of people get along really well and bring out the best in each other, it brings a smile to my face. Bringing together friends that have never met before and seeing that they click, or bridging differences between colleagues from various backgrounds so that they enjoy smoothly working together. Bliss.
Which food do you feel most related to?
Peanut butter. It’s kind of Dutch, but also international. You can eat it any time of the day, it can be healthy if you pick the right one and it’s just yummy (straight from the jar of course).
Would you rather choose a relaxing vacation or an active vacation?
I make this mistake every year. I think of myself as an ‘active vacation type’ but once I find myself in a survival situation in the middle of the jungle again, I remember that ‘next time I’ll just book something with a beach, a book and a piña colada nearby.
What is the best dessert and why?
Tiramisu for sure. With a strong double espresso on the side.
Do you have a secret recipe for something? And yes, tell it.
Yes, I make my gin and tonics with ginger ale instead of tonic. Try it!
