Today, they have 16 sub-brands, including Herman Miller, Design Within Reach, HAY, and Holly Hunt.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p\tclass=\"text text-sans-24 block-case-intro__text js-block-case-intro-text\"\n\tdata-animation=\"slideFade\" data-animation-target=\"paragraphs\" data-animation-delay=\"0.1\" >With so many brands, MillerKnoll struggled with multiple ERP systems, duplicate data, and no clear way to see customers across brands. DEPT\u00ae\u2019s data team worked alongside MillerKnoll to address their technical debt, integrate data, and build custom dashboards for their entire organization.<\/p><\/div>\n\n<div\n\tclass=\"block-assets-and-copy js-block-assets-and-copy has-less-t-space\"\n\tdata-variant=\"full-width-content\"\n\tdata-content-align=\"center\"\n>\n\t<h2\tclass=\"text text-sans-48 block-assets-and-copy__title\"\n\tdata-animation=\"slide\" data-animation-target=\"words\" >An aging analytics infrastructure\u00a0<\/h2><div\tdata-animation=\"slide-fade\" data-animation-target=\"inner-items-separate\" data-animation-delay=\"0.15\" data-animation-stagger=\"0.2\" class=\"block-assets-and-copy__content\" >\n\t<p\tclass=\"text text-sans-24 block-assets-and-copy__text\"\n\t>MillerKnoll had an old data warehouse managed by a single data advocate.<br>\u00a0<br>Their system had functionality problems and technical debt that was slowing down the organization. It had technical dependencies that were difficult to support, including file export formats that needed custom scripts to decode.<br>\u00a0<br>The biggest challenge with the old system was that databases and systems were never integrated. Instead, every few years, new systems would launch, adding to the total collection, spreading data out, and creating incomplete pictures across several \u201csources of truth.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<br><br>This aging and diverse analytics infrastructure hindered MillerKnoll from having a unified view of customers and products.<\/p><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<img\n\t\t\t\t\tsrc=\"https:\/\/www.deptagency.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Herman-Miller-case-image-1920x1080-2.jpg\"\n\t\t\t\t\talt=\"Herman Miller data project\"\n\t\t\t\t\tclass=\"block-assets-and-copy__media js-block-assets-and-copy-media\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-animation=\"scale-fade\"\n\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\n\t<\/div>\n\n<div\n\tclass=\"block-assets-and-copy js-block-assets-and-copy\"\n\tdata-variant=\"copy-only\"\n\tdata-content-align=\"center\"\n>\n\t<h2\tclass=\"text text-sans-48 block-assets-and-copy__title\"\n\tdata-animation=\"slide\" data-animation-target=\"words\" >Building a single-source of truth\u00a0<\/h2><div\tdata-animation=\"slide-fade\" data-animation-target=\"inner-items-separate\" data-animation-delay=\"0.15\" data-animation-stagger=\"0.2\" class=\"block-assets-and-copy__content\" >\n\t<p\tclass=\"text text-sans-24 block-assets-and-copy__text\"\n\t>MillerKnoll\u2019s multi-brand, multi-channel data needed to be organized into a coherent picture. To achieve this, we built a new data platform as the &#8220;single source of truth&#8221; to support three core data products.\u00a0<br><br>This \u201cNorthstar\u201d platform replaced the existing data warehouse with a new Data Platform that combined open-source, off-the-shelf tools to work for the client, not against them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul\n\tclass=\"list text-sans-24 block-list__list\"\n\t>\n\t<li><strong>Orchestration<\/strong>: Airflow (via Astronomer) orchestrated data pipelines by enabling the programmatic writing, scheduling, and monitoring of complex workflows using Python. SQL was the data transformation language.<\/li><li><strong>Compute<\/strong>: Snowflake was the SQL execution engine underlying the logical data warehouse.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Storage<\/strong>: AWS S3 is used to store files and data.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>CI\/CD<\/strong>: CircleCI provided the code deployment with two environments, <em>testing<\/em> and <em>prod.<\/em> Pipelines had to run through <em>testing<\/em> before being promoted to <em>prod<\/em>.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Source control<\/strong>: Github was the source control system, capturing Airflow source code, scheduling, the logic of the data pipelines and dependencies, data transformations, quality controls, and configurations.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Data quality: <\/strong>SQL tests were embedded within the data pipelines to ensure data quality.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Alerting and monitoring:<\/strong> Alerts from failures in airflow or notifications from Data Quality tests were integrated with Slack and Email notifications, ensuring the right people were notified to take action.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n<p\tclass=\"text text-sans-24 block-text__text\"\n\t>This combination of tools follows our guiding principles for a data platform, which are 1) Consolidate business logic, 2) Automate almost everything, 3) Treat data like software, and 4) Bring the internal team along<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t\n\t<\/div>\n\n<div\n\tclass=\"block-assets-and-copy js-block-assets-and-copy\"\n\tdata-variant=\"full-width-content\"\n\tdata-content-align=\"center\"\n>\n\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<img\n\t\t\t\t\tsrc=\"https:\/\/www.deptagency.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Herman-Miller-case-image-1920x1080-3.jpg\"\n\t\t\t\t\talt=\"Herman Miller data project\"\n\t\t\t\t\tclass=\"block-assets-and-copy__media js-block-assets-and-copy-media\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-animation=\"scale-fade\"\n\t\t\t\t>\n\t\t\t\n\t<\/div>\n\n<div\n\tclass=\"block-assets-and-copy js-block-assets-and-copy\"\n\tdata-variant=\"copy-only\"\n\tdata-content-align=\"center\"\n>\n\t<h2\tclass=\"text text-sans-48 block-assets-and-copy__title\"\n\tdata-animation=\"slide\" data-animation-target=\"words\" >Three data products built atop the data platform<\/h2><div\tdata-animation=\"slide-fade\" data-animation-target=\"inner-items-separate\" data-animation-delay=\"0.15\" data-animation-stagger=\"0.2\" class=\"block-assets-and-copy__content\" >\n\t<p\tclass=\"text text-sans-24 block-assets-and-copy__text\"\n\t><strong>Cross-channel sales reporting dashboard<\/strong><br>With so many sales channels, products, and data streams, it was difficult for them to figure out how many (and which kind of) office chairs they sold. This custom dashboard gave them a picture of retail and contract sales across their suite of products.\u00a0<br><br><strong>Email and cross-channel marketing performance reporting<\/strong><br>MillerKnoll\u2019s email marketing program was only a few years old, but they also started dabbling in social media marketing. What ads were converting? And where were they wasting money? We created two separate reporting dashboards (one email, one social) and then one mixed dashboard so they could view all email and social media marketing activity and results.\u00a0<br><br><strong>Churn analysis\u00a0<\/strong><br>When millions of people started working from home during COVID-19, workers bought office chairs in droves.\u00a0<br><br>Out of the millions of people who purchased an office chair, who would likely make additional purchases down the road? How could their team find the best people to target?<br><br>Our data science team created a machine learning model that could predict what customers would be more or less likely to make additional purchases in the future.
